@Elijah Ramirez Actually, Alcatraz was used as a harbor during World War II as far I remember reading, and by the Navy, not the Army. You should really take the audio tour next time you’re there, you’ll learn more than you think.
@Ryan Jackson Well, it’s a high security federal prison so it’s gotta be in a place where you just can’t escape. It’s now more accessible but back in the day, you wouldn’t even be allowed to come near it.
@Ryan Jackson Lol, I guess it would keep the inmates sort of happy or not occupied with getting more violent? I’ve only been here once and I was surprised with just how good the whole place is. If I didn’t know it was a prison, I would’ve thought it’s a harbor for the US Army.
@Jennifer Jones Yes, it certainly is the best way to escape (pun intended) from the San Francisco lifestyle, isn’t it? Lol, I get that it’s probably the only prison in a beautiful, movie-like setting so it doesn’t surprise me that even my girlfriend is interested in visiting this place every now and then. Still, I enjoy coming here with my friends to catch some fresh air and probably jump off the boat :P
It’s surprising how the most notorious and legendary prison in the world is nestled in such a beautiful setting. We took a cruise and were really surprised by the marine and wild life. The Cellhouse Audio Tour is the best way to discover the history of Alcatraz and its infamous inmates like Al Capone and Robert Stroud and the American Indian Occupation in ‘69.
