Qasr Al Hosn

Qasr Al Hosn

Being one of the oldest stone buildings to be present in Abu Dhabi city, the Qasr Al Hosn is a major landmark in the U.A.E. capital. This great and historic stone building is located along the First Street of the Sheikh Zayed road. This old structure houses the interesting and famous Cultural Foundation in the building grounds.

Also known as the White Fort, or Old Fort, this building was constructed in the year 1761, in the design of a conical watchtower. It was constructed to defend access to the only source of freshwater, which was a well within the entire island of Abu Dhabi. Later, the tower was further added into it, to form a fort, in the year 1793.

The work was initiated by the ruler of that time Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan. This small fort later became the permanent home of the ruler. Extension work was initiated in the 1930s which gave the building its present shape. The Palace Fort, which is the translation for Qasr Al Hosn, served as the palace of the emir and the actual seat of the government till the year 1966. The fort is partially open for public, and is currently the subject of extensive historical, architectural and archaeological research within the city.
