It is unique in the sense that it is one of only three original Jacobean mansions located in the Western Hemisphere. St Nicholas has no religious connection and has always remained a sugarcane plantation house. The historical mansion located in Barbados was built between 1650 and 1660 by Colonel Benjamin Berringer. The origin of the mansion's name is not known but some say that it was named after George Nicholas, who was the husband of Berringer's daughter.
