Rafting on the Orontes

Rafting on the Orontes

No trip to Lebanon is complete without white water rafting on the Orontes or Assi River. Imagine canoes and kayaks floating on the waters of this river which is part of the Orontes valley. With a number of big drops and white waters, the river is ideal for those who prefer to live on the edge and make the most of their vacation. The locals have opened their own rafting clubs besides the river which has only improved the economy transforming the activity into one of the most preferred in the area. It can get pretty crowded on Sundays though so if you want a private lesson on the raging waters with no one to see you if you wipe out, then better book a weekend class.

The largest area of the river is under the municipality of a small village called Hermel which lies on the northern edge of the Bekaa valley. It is about 140 km from Beirut and lies about 600m above sea level. From there you can take part in some of the best white water rafting action in the region and experience an adrenaline rush that will last for hours afterwards. You will be provided with appropriate safety gear so no need to bring your own.

Wine Road

Wine Road

If you are a wine connoisseur or just love the beverage, then you are going to fall in love with Lebanon’s wine country. That is basically what the Bekaa Valley is, a prime tourist spot for those who love nothing more than the finest vintages the world has to offer. Even if you prefer to travel solo while in Lebanon, you can just hop in a car and head over to the mountain pass located at Dahr el Baidar, along the road to Chtaura, straight to a number of possibilities that offer mouthwatering food and equally delicious wines for the weary traveler.

The oldest of Lebanon’s wineries is located just past the Massabki Hotel, which was founded by a French engineer in 1868. It has actually been passed down through his generations and is run by his descendants after his passing in 2000. The winery is known for producing the famous vintage called Arak Brun. For tours, you will need to give a 24 hour notice to the owners so they can prepare accordingly. This includes an exclusive wine tasting in the garden of the winery itself if you are lucky enough!
