Bodrum Castle is a castle located in the coastal city of Bodrum in southwest Turkey. Work on the Bodrum Castle started early in 1402 by the Knights of St. John. Then known as the Petronium or Castle of Saint Peter, the Bodrum Castle has been well preserved over centuries, and is under consideration for World Heritage Site. One of the best things to do in Bodrum Castle is to take guided tours which are available from various tour operators in the city. Hour-long tours are highly recommended to explore the castle and its rich history that spans more than five centuries. Visitors taking self guided tours are advised to wear shoes as there is a lot of climbing involved when exploring the massive structure. The castle was turned into a museum in 1962 by the Turkish Government for underwater discoveries in Aegean Sea. The island was later taken over by the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century and was assigned to Turkey in the 1931 Convention that took place between Turkey and Italy. Today Kara Ada is a popular tourist destination, especially for adventure seekers. The island is barely 10-minutes from Bodrum in a normal boat and is the largest of the chain of islands off the coast of Bodrum.
