The region was formerly known as Tacurú Pucú in honor of the first native governor of the region. The city has a very nice atmosphere and remains warm all around the year. The city receives a lot of rainfall as well. There are around 80,000 people in the city according to the latest census details. The Hernandarias forms a section of the greater Ciudad del Este. The region has many things to do in Paraguay and was home to the natives, but it was discovered by the Jesuits in the 17th Century in modern times. One of the things to do in Paraguay is to visit the Museum of Guarani Land which focuses on the history of the native people of this region. There is also a zoo in an area of around 12 hectares.

Itaipu Dam

Itaipu Dam is a hydroelectric dam that is located on the Paraná River on the border between Paraguay and Brazil. In the local Guarani language the word Itaipu means a sounding stone..The name of the dam was taken from an isle of the same name that existed before the construction of the dam. It represents a bi-national undertaking by the countries of Paraguay and Brazil located north of the Friendship Bridge.

The total installed generation capacity of the dam is 14 GW with 20 generating units providing a maximum output of 700 MW each. The project ranges from Ciudad de Este in Paraguay, and Foz do Iguacu in Brazil, in the north to Salto del Guairá and Guairá in the south. This dam was voted as the seven modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1994 and there are many things to do in Itaipu Dam. A lake was formed near the dam in 1982 when the side canal's gate data were closed. Heavy rain and flooded acted as a catalyst in formation of the lakes.
