Portugal was once a major naval force on Earth. The Portuguese can in fact, be credited with cartographing portions of the world’s first map. If you are curious about what the times were like back then, be sure to visit the Navy Museum in Lisbon. Located in the tourist district of Belém and administered by the Portugese Navy, this museum documents the seagoing adventures of Portugese ships ranging back from the early explorations up to modern times. The collection on display is quite exquisite indeed. The exhibits range from numerous scale models of 15th Century Portuguese exploration ships, archaeological items, historical paintings, weapons and cannons, as well as several navigational instruments and maps. Some of these items, dating back as far as 1863, were collected by King Luis II himself, who had an immense interest in oceanography and was an excellent navigator himself. It also houses Portugal’s first Navy aero plane, the Fairey III "Santa Cruz" that flew over the Atlantic Ocean in 1923. You can spend hours looking at models of grand ancient royal barges and behemoth warships here. If you love boats and history, this place is paradise for you. There is something for everybody to learn here. And don’t forget to take some souvenirs home from the Museum’s store at the end of the day.more
