Masaya Volcano is situated in the department of Masaya in Nicaragua. The volcano is one of the protected areas in the country consisting of craters and calderas of which Las Sierras shield is the largest. Within the Las Sierras caldera, a sub-vent is located that is a type of shield that consists of basaltic lavas with a crater in the summit. Visitors can find many interesting things to do in Masaya Volcano. It is the largest national park in the country. It is the only volcano located in the western hemisphere where you can drive to the edge. The park contains an underground tunnel that was shaped by lava flows. Here you can find bats and examine glowing lava that is located at the volcano's mouth near the dark crater. Inside the Masaya Volcano is a Masaya caldera that originated due to an eruption about 2,500 years ago. Inside the Masaya caldera, a new complex has formed from subsequent eruptions on semi circular vents mainly on the Nindiri and Masaya cones.
