Covering 50,000 square kilometers of wilderness, The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest faunal reserves in the world. The game reserve comprises of grassy plains, mountains, open woodlands, and forests. Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji, flows in the heart of the Selous Game Reserve and divides it into two distinct sections – the southern Selous and the northern Selous. The northern Selous which covers a small area of the reserve is dedicated to photographic safaris exclusively. On the other hand, the southern Selous takes up about 90% of the reserve and has several hunting blocks, each covering about 1,000 square kilometers.

The wildlife of the Selous Game Reserve attracts thousands of tourists every year. The reserve harbors significant concentrations of elephants, wild dogs, buffaloes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and fantastic prides of lions.
