Things to do in Ruhengeri

Ruhengeri is a great vacation destination in Africa. Visitors will certainly not be disappointed in their choice of visiting this sleepy yet attractive city in Rwanda. The city offers a unique mixture of African culture, untamed wildlife, and scenic landscape. There are a number of wonderful outdoor attractions present in the city that makes it a wonderful vacation destination.

Ruhengeri is situated in the Musanze District in the northern part of Rwanda. Visitors can enjoy lots of fun and adventurous things to do in Ruhengeri. The city is located near the twin lakes of Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera. These two lakes serve as a picturesque place for photo ops and picnicking. The area is also renowned the world over for Volcanoes National Park and Mountain Gorillas in the north western part of the country.

The city of Ruhengeri is famous for its various markets that are scattered all across the downtown area. Visitors can buy locally made goods from the souvenir shops that will serve as a memento of visiting the place. Apart from that visitors can indulge their taste pallets by visiting well known eateries locate in the city including Volcano Lounge, La Pailllotte, Happiness Restaurant, and Gorrila hotel. Volcanoes National Park is situated in the north west of Rwanda and lies on the border of the Virunga National Park located in the Democratic Republic of Congo along with the Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The park is a well known haven for the elusive mountain gorilla and is also known for being home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains. These are covered in rainforests and bamboo and are also known as being the base for the famed zoologist Dian Fossey.

The mountains straddle the borders of DRC, Uganda and Rwanda and the volcanic massif covers 8,000 square kilometers which comprise of 6 active and 3 extinct volcanoes. Gorillas can be seen crossing the borders but most groups can be found in the park itself. More than half of the world’s mountain gorillas call this place home, making the park a must visit for tourists and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Most safaris to the reserve start from the town of Musanze which also boasts several cafes and restaurants and can be accessed via a 1 or 2 hour drive from Kigali. Gorilla trek permits are strictly regulated by park personnel and need to be approved beforehand so better start planning soon if you wish to visit.
