Atop a small green hill surrounded by towering mountains stands a ruined castle called Plainburg. There are a lot of things to do in Burgruine Plainburg. It is believed to have been built and housed by the counts of Plain who were once an elite family in southern Salzburg. Although not much has been left of the castle, but the principal structure provides the visitors with one of the best views a residential/official building could have. It is situated on a hill covered with lush green grass surrounded by snowcapped peaks that overlook the castle. Judging by the architecture, the castle seems like a private residence rather than a defense structure. The gates open directly into the courtyard which is also covered in green grass resembling an expensive carpet. With the addition of observation decks and transportation facilities, the castle has turned into a very popular tourist spot. The castle is accessible all year round with the exception of the courtyard which is closed off in the winters.
