Best attractions to visit in Sinai

1. Mount Sinai - Sinai

Mount Sinai

For those who’ve studied Christianity and Judaism, Mount Sinai should ring a bell. This is the famous mountain, which is frequently mentioned in the Book of Exodus, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Also known as Mount Horeb, this mountain is located in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. The mountain is an interesting landscape. It was formed millions of years ago, during the evolution of Arabian-Nubian Shield. The result is a complex ring-network of large rocks, comprised of alkaline granites and some small-scale volcanoes. Mount Sinai is considered to be one of the most sacred places in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to the three faiths, this was where God gave order and laws to the Israelites. Saint Catherine’s Monastery is a Greek Orthodox Church that was established at the foothill of the mountain and serves as is widely considered to be the oldest of all churches. It is a World Heritage Site, as declared by UNESCO. The easiest and most direct route to the mountain is the Siket Sayidna Musa. This is where the famous “3750 steps of penitence” are located and lead right up to the monastery. Moving up north, a small cave is located which is where Moses is said to have waited, before receiving the word of God.

2. Saint Catherine’s Monastery - Sinai

Saint Catherine s Monastery

Saint Catherine’s Monastery is also known as Santa Katarina or the Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai. It lies at the foothill of Mount Sinai, in Egypt. This Greek Orthodox Church is considered to be one of the oldest churches in the world and its location makes it a sacred place. The monastery was established somewhere between 548 and 565 AD. It contains the world’s oldest (and still functioning) library, along with several unique books, ancient scrolls, and other important factors. According to the Bible, Mount Sinai was the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. Legend has it that angels took the remains of Catherine of Alexandria to Mount Sinai. Catherine was a Christian martyr and is considered to be a Saint by many. The monastery was built in honor of the Saint and has become one of the most favorite sites of pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians. Since the monastery was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it became a popular tourist attraction of Egypt. A small village was built around the monastery which became a cultural center.
