Things to do in Kalahari Basin

में घूमने योग्य सबसे अच्छे आकर्षण Kalahari Basin

1. Lake Makgadikgadi - Kalahari Basin

Lake Makgadikgadi

Lake Makgadikgadi or the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi was an ancient lake which made up what is now the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. It used to cover about 80,000 square kilometers and was about 30 meters deep. The now salt plains are considered to be the biggest on the globe and look like white endless plains as far as the eye can see. During the rainy season, they become one of the most important wetlands in the area especially when the barren land comes alive with verdant grass plains. The plains are located right between Francistown and Maun and come alive with various water birds and large herds of herbivores when it rains. They are also home to the rare and prehistoric baobas trees and offer a couple of camping options to visitors. The first can be found in Njuca Hills which overlooks the open plains and which also offer a view of large herds of zebras and wildebeest. The second is a public camping ground at Kumaga which is located about 50 km from the main entrance and is right on the banks of the Boteti River. If you are planning a trip to this historical lake/salt plains, then it would be best to visit it during the rainy season.

2. Etosha Pan - Kalahari Basin

Etosha Pan

Ethosa Pan, located in northern Namibia, is a large salt pan that forms some of Kalahari Basin. The 75-mile stretch of lakebed is sheltered by the Ethosa National Park. Both the Ethosa National Park and the Ethosa pan are known for their distinct weather trends and preservation of wildlife. But while Ethosa National Park has a more or less desert climate, the Ethosa Pan sees heavy rainfall leading to muddy slopes. Ethosa is Afrikaans for ‘Great White Place’, which refers to the large mineral pan in the area. Ethosa Pan has more than 4,800 square kilometers of green and white surface, developed due to the tectonic activity that occurred millions of years ago. The Ethosa Pan today features dry clay, mostly split into cracks and dried with thin sheets of water covering them. The area was first explored by non-Africans in the colonial era when Europeans Francis Galton and Charles John Andersson found it in 1851. The Ethosa Pan is within the Ethosa National Park, and has one of the largest species of flora and fauna. The rest camps are available with guided tours that can let you explore the distinct wildlife of Southern Africa in a quintessential natural setting.
