An Honest Look at the Murder Mystery Experience
This detective adventure is designed as an audio-based game that takes you through 10 specific locations in or near Kingsport. You get to step into the shoes of a detective, following clues, listening to narrative stories, and eventually making an arrest. The experience lasts around 2 hours and 30 minutes—though you can pause and resume at your convenience—which makes it a flexible activity that can fit into most schedules.
What sets this experience apart is the choice between a walking map and a driving map. If the weather is nice, or you’re eager to stretch your legs, the walking version guides you through downtown Kingsport, visiting key spots while listening to the story. If you prefer to stay warm or are limited in mobility, the driving map allows you to enjoy the adventure from your vehicle — perfect for families or those with limited time.
The audio component is quite well-produced, with 16 different characters voiced by professional actors, adding depth and realism to the storyline. This level of production can make even a simple park or street corner feel lively and important to the narrative.
Pricing at $14.99 per person is competitive for this kind of activity, especially considering the inclusion of a mobile GPS map, scoring system, and the ability to play on multiple devices if you’re in a group. That said, some reviewers feel the game is more about the gameplay than the actual location. As one comment puts it, “Didn’t really need to be in Kingsport to solve the mystery,” which suggests the thematic elements are portable.

Itinerary Breakdown
The adventure begins at 414 Broad Street, the designated starting point, where you’ll receive instructions for accessing your mobile game. From there, the game guides you through 10 mapped locations, which you can visit either by walking through downtown or driving around the outskirts of the city.
In the downtown version, you’ll explore familiar sights at a relaxed pace, listening to clues and dialogue that draw you into the story. The quality of the audio and voice acting often adds to the fun. For example, hearing 16 different characters come to life makes each scene feel more immersive. The locations are designed to be accessible, but since this is primarily an audio experience, you’ll need a charged smartphone and earbuds for the best experience.
The driving option takes you to more outlying locations, perhaps giving a broader view of Kingsport’s outskirts and natural scenery, if you’re interested in combining your mystery-solving with some sightseeing on wheels.
The Experience for Different Types of Participants
This activity is suitable for solo travelers who want a self-guided mystery, as well as small groups or couples who can share one device. If you’re competing for points, you might find the scoring system adds an extra fun layer of motivation. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t a traditional walking tour with sights to see — the focus is on the mystery story and clue-gathering.
What Travelers Say
Feedback is limited but revealing: one reviewer gave it a 3 out of 5, stating “Definitely not a walking tour. Didn’t really need to be in Kingsport to solve the mystery, just the additional ‘rating’ experience of the game.” This suggests that some participants might approach it more as a game or puzzle than a sightseeing tour.
The value is clear — for $14.99, you’re getting a multi-character audio story, GPS navigation, and the chance to test your detective skills. It suits those who enjoy interactive storytelling and aren’t overly concerned with seeing every landmark.
Practicalities and Considerations
- Timing: You can start anytime after booking, giving you flexibility.
- Group size: Multiple tickets are required for multiple devices, ideal for groups or competitive pairs.
- Physical requirements: A smartphone with a charged battery and earbuds are necessary.
- Accessibility: The experience is outdoor and mobile-based, so it’s accessible to most, but not suitable for very young children due to adult content.
- Location: Starts at a fixed point in Kingsport, with the route and stops clearly mapped out.
Cost-Value Analysis
At just under $15, this activity offers a unique experience that combines storytelling, problem-solving, and light outdoor activity. Compared to traditional guided tours, it’s a winner on convenience and cost. You’re paying for the story, the challenge, and the outdoor exploration — but keep in mind it’s more game than sightseeing.
Who Will Love This?
If you enjoy mysteries, puzzles, or interactive storytelling, you’ll likely find this a fun way to spend a couple of hours. It’s especially appealing for groups or couples who want a shared activity but don’t mind a game focused on clues rather than sightseeing.
Those expecting a traditional walking tour or a focus on historic sights might feel the experience is a bit disconnected from the actual town. However, if your goal is to add some playful intrigue to your trip, it’s a budget-friendly option that offers a different way to experience Kingsport.
Final Thoughts
This murder mystery game is best for travelers seeking a light-hearted, interactive challenge rather than an in-depth historical tour. Its affordable price, flexibility, and professional voice acting make it a solid choice for a relaxing afternoon or evening in Kingsport.
While it might not replace a traditional sightseeing experience, it offers a fun, engaging way to explore the outdoors and test your detective skills. It’s ideal for mystery fans, casual explorers, or groups looking for a novel activity that’s easy to fit into any schedule.
