Where is Geneva?

Switzerland

Before you find out where Geneva is, it would be a good idea to get to know a little bit about the city. Geneva is the capital of the Swiss Canton of Geneva and is situated along the banks of the largest lake in Europe, Lake Geneva. The river is based on the month of the Rhone River and is fringed with the Jura Mountains at the west and the spectacular French Alps to the East. The city can be reached easily by plane which takes about two hours at most from most major European cities. High speed trains from Milan, Paris, Spain and Germany offer access to the city as well.

Geneva is a sprawling city with an area of 6.2 square miles which include the enclaves of Celigny in Vaud. The part of Lake Geneva that is attached to the city is called the small lake or Petit lac and is situated across 14.7 square miles. The city lies at an altitude of 1.2257 feet and is similar in height to the largest of the two Pierres du Niton rocks which emerge from the lake and are as old as the last ice age. The second major river of Geneva, the Arve, flows right into the Rhone which lies to the west and you can see Mont Blanc from the city which is also just an hour’s drive if you start from Geneva.

Where is Geneva is not the only question that you should ask if you’re planning a trip there; the weather conditions vary across the year and it pays to know when you should go to ensure a comfortable vacation. The climate of the city is coastal, with cool winter nights and pleasant summer days. There is little to no precipitation throughout the year, but fall is slightly wetter compared to the other seasons. Geneva is quite popular in the summer when many tourists and locals flock to the lake to cool off. Public beaches such as the Geneve Plage and the Bain des Paquis are also very popular tourist attractions during the hot summer months but Geneva also receives a lot of snow by the end of the year.

The mountains are home to some of the most popular ski resorts in Europe with the Crans Montana and Verbier two of the most preferred. These are situated just two hours away by car from the city while the Mont Saleve lies just across the border in France. Once you know where Geneva is, you should not waste time over thinking your trip. Pack up and have a fun-filled vacation that you and your family won’t soon forget.
