Where is Guinea Bissau?

Guinea-Bissau, officially known as the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is a country in West Africa. This is where is Guinea-Bissau, bordering Guinea, Senegal, and the North Atlantic Ocean. Its geographic coordinates are 12 00 N, 15 00 W. It has an estimated population of 1,704,000 and stretches over an area of 36,125 square kilometers. It is half the size of South Carolina approximately and is characterized with swamps, wetlands covered with mangroves and rain forests. It has about 25 islands off the coast. The capital of the country is Bissau.

Furthermore, about where is Guinea-Bissau, it was once a part of the Gabu kingdom and Mali Empire. The Portuguese Guinea colonized it in the 19th century and upon its independence in 1973, the name of its capital Bissau was attached to it, in order to avoid confusing it with Guinea. Guinea-Bissau is a very flat land nation, which makes it a great country for cycling. There isn't much traffic that you can see. The country enjoys a warm climate all year round with not many temperature fluctuations.

Among the many places to visit in Guinea-Bassau, the challenge starts with exploring its stunning beaches. You will soon find that there are many with an awe-inducing atmosphere. It could be hard to reach Varela Beach in the south of the Senegalese border in the region of Cacheu, but when you do, its stunning views, and pine forests will take your breath away.

If you're interested in exploring the Portuguese history, visit Bolama Town which rests on the landward side of the Bolama Island. Here, you can explore colonial buildings of the era bygone and crumbling mansions all waiting to be explored. If you're looking for a more isolated beach where you can enjoy serenity under shady trees; head over to the island of Bubaque in the Bijago Archipelago. On the same Archipelago, you can explore Orango where you can also see hippos dwelling in the salt waters of tropical beaches.

Other interesting places to visit in Guinea-Bassau include the picturesque town of Bafata where you can wander around among Portuguese styled houses and enjoy the local specialties of the country like kaldo branco (white sauce fish) and grilled prawns. An annual carnival also takes place every year in February or March, which is a sight to behold with the locals putting up a good show of activities, dance and music.
