Where is Iceland?

Iceland is an island country that is situated between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic. The main island is located to the south of the Arctic Circle. A small island known as Grímsey that forms part of Iceland is located inside the Circle. Neighboring lands include Greenland, Faroe Islands, Jan Mayen Island, Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland.
Iceland is considered the second largest island in Europe after Great Britain. It is a remarkably scenic place where you can enjoy unadulterated landscapes due to being sparsely populated.

The area where is Iceland located is subdivided into different regions. These include the Southwest Iceland where the capital city Reykjavík is located, Western Fjord known for its rugged geography, West Iceland popular due to Snæfellsjökull glacier and Breiðafjörður islands, North Iceland containing turbulent waterfalls and dramatic lava fields, East Iceland, and South Iceland that contains the most popular tourist attractions including the Golden Circle. All of these areas contain stunningly beautiful places not found anywhere else in the world.

You can find various picturesque places to visit in Iceland that offer memorable sights and attractions. A number of excursions are offered by tour companies that are readily available from different cities such as Akuryri and Reykjavík. You can also drive around in a rented car and visit various natural landscapes on your own. Once you know where is Iceland located and also the scenic places in the island, you will not have much difficulty in exploring the area even by yourself.
Vatnajökull National Park is one of the most interesting places o visit in Iceland. It is the fourth largest park in Europe that covers about 12% of the land area.

Here you can find lofty mountain, large glacier, and majestic waterfall. Þingvellir National Park (pronounced "THING-vet-lihr") situated to the east of the capital city Reykjavík is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Another interesting park is the Snæfellsjökull National Park that is located in the western part of the island country. Apart from natural parks there are many other areas of interest in Iceland. Blue Lagoon is a famous outdoor spa located in Grindavík on the Peninsula of Reykjanes in south-western part of the island. Then there is the Hverir at Mývatn that contains various volcanic craters. Dimmuborgir known as the Gates of Hell and Smajfall where sulphuric steam rises from the ground are two interesting sites located in Mývatn.
