Where is Moldova? The Republic of Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe that gained independence in August, 1991 following is secession from the Soviet Union. Moldova is a landlocked country with an area of approximately 33,846 square kilometers and is bordered by Romania from the west and Ukraine from the south, east, and north. Chisinau is the capital and largest city of the country that is home to approximately 500,000 residents.

Moldova is known for its distinct culture as it is nestled at the crossroads of Slavic, Latin, Romanian and Russian culture. The official language of Moldova is Romanian, while Russian, English, French, and German are recognized languages.

Moldova was the hub of the Cucteni-Trypillian civilization from 5500 BC to 2750 BC. In 1812, Moldova ceded to the Russian Empire and was subject to Soviet occupation until its independence in 1991.

Despite being close to the Black Sea, Moldova is a landlocked country that features hilly and elevated terrains and large network of rivers. A significant area of the country is based on the Prut and Dniester rivers. The Balanesta Hill is one of the top places to visit in Moldova and is the highest elevation in the country at 430 meters. Moldova has a moderate continental climate, making the weather pleasant throughout the year.

The northern region of the country is characterized by the Dniester Hills, Moldavian Plain, and Central Moldavian Plateau. Towards the south, the Bugeac Plain makes up for the flatlands. Moldova is generally divided into four areas - the center where the capital city is located, the eastern region of Transnistria where Tiraspol is based, the northern region where Balti is located and southeast region where Bender is based.
