Where is Montenegro? The Sovereign State of Montenegro is located in Southeastern Europe along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, whereas Cetinje is designated as the Royal Capital City or Prijestonica. The official language of the country is Montenegrin, whereas Serbian, Albanian, Bosnian, and Croatian are given national language status. Montenegro gained independence from Yugoslavia on the basis of referendum in June 2006.

Montenegro has an area of approximately 13,812 square kilometers and is bordered by Adriatic Sea from the southwest, Croatia from the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina from the northwest, Serbia from the northeast, and Albania from the southeast.

Where is Montenegro in geography and tourism? The geography of Montenegro is characterized by high mountain ranges bordering Albania, Serbia, and Kosovo, to coastal plains of about four miles wide. The plains are surrounded by Mount Orjen and Mount Lovcen, forming an inlet known as the Bay of Kotor. Montenegro has some of the most rugged mountain terrains in Europe, with Bobotov Kuk serving as the most notable peaks in the country. The highest peak however is Zla Kolata at 2,534 meters above sea level. The Skadar Lake is the largest lake in the country with an area of 391 square kilometers.

Montenegro is considered as one of the major biodiversity hotspots in the world, and has five national parks of which Durmitor National Park along with Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor are designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The Durmitor National Park is one of the top places to visit in Montenegro for mountain tourism. Tourist facilities are available in the nearby town of Zabljak, allowing winter activities like snowboarding and skiing and summer activities like hiking, trekking, and recreational tourism. The Tara River Canyon is situated within the park and is the second largest in the world after only the Grand Canyon.
