Where is Niger?

Where is Niger? This landlocked country is located in West Africa and is named after the Niger River. The country shares a border with Libya to the northeast, Nigeria and Benin to the north, and Algeria to the northwest. Covering a land area that measures about 1,270,000 square km, it is considered to be the largest country in that side of Africa and most of that area is covered by the sands of the Sahara Desert. The Air Mountains rise up on the north and are home to a stunning oasis.

Tenere Desert hides dinosaur bones and ancient medieval settlements that date back centuries. So it is little wonder why the deserts are some of the best places to visit in Niger for archeologists and paleontologists besides casual vacationers.
If you head south, you will come across the ancient trans-Saharan trade route town called Agadez which is home to several complex mud based architecture. Considered to be one of Niger’s most fascinating cities, it is quite easy to imagine the city as it was a couple of centuries ago. However, if you are a nature lover, the wild giraffes at Koure are a must see.

The Air Mountains in Niger are volcanic masses that rise from the Sahara desert and stand at a massive 2000m. Tafadeq is particularly known for the Neolithic rock art and the thermal hot springs surrounding it. To visit an oasis, the towns of Timia and Iferouane are a must visit.
