Where is Taiwan?

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, is an independent state that is located in East Asia. Historically, the area was known to the Europeans as Formosa until the early 20th century. The country is located about 112 miles (180 km) off the southeastern coast of mainland China.

The Philippine Sea is situated towards the east, the East China Sea towards the north, the South China Sea to the southwest and the Luzon Strait to the south. Towards the west of Taiwan lies China, Japan to the east, and the Philippians to the south. All of these countries are located not far from where is Taiwan. Capital city of the country is Taipei that, together with the neighboring Keelung and New Taipei, forms the largest metropolitan area in Taiwan.

The Taipei National Museum is one of the world's biggest museums that has more than 696,000 pieces of Chinese artifacts. Then there is Taipei 101 tower located in the capital city of Taiwan. Before Burj Khalifa in Dubai, it bore the title of the tallest building in the world. .

You can visit the top floor of this tower to view breathtaking vista of the city. The tower itself has various tourist hotspots including restaurants, bars, and stores. Taroko National Park in Hualien is another great attraction in Taiwan. This park contains the Taorke Gorge which is a natural landmark that attracts a large number of visitors every year.

The Fort Provintia and Fort Zeelandia in Tainan, which is a city in southern Taiwan, are famous for their night markets and traditional cuisines. The place had once served as the capital of Taiwan and contains many fortresses, temples, and shrines. Sun Moon Lake is a favorite tourist spot in Tainan. This lake makes up one of the largest body of waters in Taiwan. Area around the lake is home to the indigenous tribe of Thao in Taiwan.

Alishan National Scenic Area in Chiayi is also considered a great place to visit in Taiwan that is a natural preserve comprising of forests, waterfalls, tea plantation, and hiking trails.
