A shark swam over my head. Not a metaphorical shark — an actual 3-meter sand tiger shark, gliding through 10 million liters of water while I stood in a glass tunnel wondering whether acrylic really is as strong as they claim.
It is. The Dubai Aquarium tunnel has held since 2008. But your brain doesn’t care about engineering when a shark’s belly is a meter above your face.

Dubai has two major aquariums — one inside the Dubai Mall and one at Atlantis on the Palm. They’re different enough to warrant separate visits. The Dubai Mall Aquarium is about the big tank and the underwater zoo above it. The Lost Chambers at Atlantis is about atmosphere and the Atlantis mythology theme.

Dubai Mall Aquarium & Underwater Zoo
Located on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall, this aquarium is impossible to miss — the massive viewing panel is visible from the shopping corridors. Even without a ticket, you can watch sharks and rays through the glass while people around you carry shopping bags from Gucci. Dubai is a strange place.

The Tunnel
The 48-meter tunnel runs through the bottom of the main tank. You walk through with sharks, rays, and fish circling above and around you. The acrylic is crystal clear and the lighting is designed to make the water look natural rather than artificial.
The tunnel is the most popular part and it gets crowded by midday. Visit before 11am for the best experience — fewer people means more time to stand and stare at the sharks without someone’s selfie stick blocking your view.

The Underwater Zoo
Above the tunnel, the Underwater Zoo spans three ecological zones — Rainforest, Rocky Shore, and Living Ocean. It’s more traditional zoo than aquarium — otters, penguins, piranhas, seahorses, and a giant crocodile named King Croc.

Optional Experiences
Cage Snorkeling ($60+): You’re lowered into the main tank in a cage, surrounded by sharks and rays. No diving certification needed. The cage keeps you safe while the marine life swims at arm’s length.

Shark Dive ($100+): For certified divers, a guided dive inside the main tank with the sharks. This is the premium experience and requires PADI Open Water certification or equivalent.
Glass-Bottom Boat ($30+): A small boat rides across the top of the tank. You look down through the glass floor at sharks below. Less intense than the cage or dive options.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo Experience — $56

The standard ticket includes the tunnel walk, the full Underwater Zoo, and the glass-bottom boat ride. At $56, it’s a 2-hour experience that works for all ages. The tunnel is the highlight but the Underwater Zoo keeps kids engaged for longer.
Book online for a specific time slot — the tunnel has capacity limits and walk-up visitors sometimes wait 20+ minutes during peak hours. Read our full review of the Dubai Aquarium.
Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis
The Lost Chambers is a completely different aquarium experience. Located inside Atlantis, The Palm, it’s themed around the lost city of Atlantis — 20 exhibits recreating underwater ruins populated by 65,000 marine animals.

The atmosphere is more immersive than the Dubai Mall Aquarium. The lighting is dimmer, the sound design is theatrical, and the “ruins” create a sense of exploration — like you’re discovering an underwater city rather than visiting an attraction.

Lost Chambers Aquarium Entry Ticket — $45

At $45, the Lost Chambers is cheaper than the Dubai Mall Aquarium and arguably more atmospheric. The Atlantis theme adds narrative depth that makes it feel less like a fish tank and more like an adventure. Allow 90 minutes for a thorough visit.
If you’re visiting Aquaventure, the Lost Chambers is included in your waterpark ticket — no need to buy separately. It’s the perfect midday break from the slides. See our full review of the Lost Chambers.
Dubai Mall Aquarium vs Lost Chambers — Which One?
They’re different enough that the answer depends on what you want.

Choose the Dubai Mall Aquarium if: You want the biggest tank, the most dramatic tunnel, and the option for shark dives or cage snorkeling. The Underwater Zoo adds variety with land and marine animals. Location inside the Dubai Mall means easy to combine with shopping and the Burj Khalifa.
Choose the Lost Chambers if: You want atmosphere and immersion. The Atlantis theme creates a more engaging experience, especially for children who love the treasure-hunt feel. Already going to Aquaventure? The Lost Chambers is included — don’t buy a separate ticket.
Do both if you can. They complement each other beautifully. The Dubai Mall Aquarium for the big-tank spectacle and the Lost Chambers for the themed exploration. Budget half a day for both.

Practical Tips
Visit early morning. Both aquariums open at 10am. The first hour is the quietest. By noon, school groups and families fill every viewing window. Morning also means better fish activity — feeding happens in the early hours.

Photography works well in both. The tanks are lit for cameras. Turn off your flash — it reflects off the glass and disturbs the animals. Press your phone against the glass for the sharpest shots. Night mode helps in the darker Lost Chambers sections.
The Dubai Mall Aquarium viewing panel is free. You can see the main tank from the mall floor without a ticket. If you only want a quick look at sharks from above, save your $56 and just walk past. The tunnel and zoo require paid entry.

Allow 1.5-2 hours per aquarium. The Dubai Mall Aquarium is slightly longer if you add the optional experiences (cage, dive, boat). The Lost Chambers moves faster but the atmosphere encourages lingering.
Combo tickets save money. The Dubai Mall Aquarium offers combos with the Burj Khalifa and other Dubai Mall attractions. The Lost Chambers is included with Aquaventure. Check what’s bundled before buying individual tickets.
The Marine Life — What You’ll Actually See
Both aquariums house impressive collections. Here are the animals worth looking for.

Sand tiger sharks are the headline residents at the Dubai Mall Aquarium. Despite the name, they’re not aggressive toward humans. They cruise through the main tank with an air of casual menace that makes every tunnel visitor instinctively duck.
Giant groupers patrol the bottom of the main tank like underwater bouncers. Some weigh over 200kg. They’re surprisingly curious about the people in the tunnel and will sometimes approach the glass for a closer look.
Jellyfish at the Lost Chambers are displayed in specially lit cylindrical tanks that make them look like living art installations. Moon jellies, compass jellies, and upside-down jellies — each species moves differently and the effect is genuinely beautiful.
Rays are the most graceful residents at both aquariums. Eagle rays, stingrays, and guitar sharks glide through the water with a serenity that makes you forget they’re related to sharks. The touch pools at the Dubai Mall let you feel a ray’s skin — it’s smoother than you’d expect.
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings (10-11am) are ideal for both aquariums. Schools visit on field trips during weekday afternoons, so mornings are significantly quieter. The fish are more active in the morning too — feeding schedules are front-loaded.
The Dubai Mall Aquarium gets busiest between 4-7pm when shoppers add it to their mall visit. Weekends are consistently crowded. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, arrive at opening for the best experience.
The Lost Chambers is quietest in the early afternoon when Aquaventure guests are on the waterslides. The post-lunch crowd thins out and you’ll have many exhibits to yourself. Late afternoon (4-5pm) sees a second wave as waterpark visitors come inside to cool down.
Getting There
Dubai Mall Aquarium: Inside the Dubai Mall, ground floor. Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station (Red Line), then a 10-minute walk through the air-conditioned walkway.
Lost Chambers: Inside Atlantis, The Palm. Palm Monorail from Gateway station to Atlantis, or taxi ($15-$25 from central Dubai).
What Else to Do in Dubai
The Dubai Mall Aquarium is steps from the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain. The Lost Chambers is at Atlantis, next to Aquaventure Waterpark. Both are easy to combine with other attractions.
For more marine life, the jet ski tours and speedboat tours take you past both aquarium locations on the water. And the desert safari is the perfect contrast — from underwater to sand dunes in one day.
