A Deep Dive into the Experience

What is the Murder Mystery Detective Experience?

This is a self-guided, audio-based game designed to turn your exploration of Cheyenne into a crime-solving adventure. Upon booking, you receive instructions and a mobile app that provides GPS-guided turn-by-turn directions. The experience is designed to last around 2 hours 30 minutes, but you can take your time and pause as needed.

The game places you in the role of a detective tasked by Commander Mahoney to solve a murder case. Over the course of the adventure, you’ll visit 10 different map locations—either on foot in the downtown area or by car on the outskirts—where you’ll listen to story snippets, gather clues, and analyze evidence.

The Route and How You Play

You get to choose between a Walking Map and a Driving Map. The walking route takes you through the heart of Cheyenne’s downtown, allowing you to enjoy the city’s sights and ambiance. The driving option is perfect if the weather isn’t cooperating or if you prefer a more laid-back pace, especially on the outskirts of town.

Each stop presents a new character voiced by professional actors, making the story lively and immersive. The clues provided range from visual hints to audio cues, and they’re designed to challenge your deductive reasoning.

What to Expect During the Tour

Once underway, you’ll listen to an engaging narrative that guides your detective journey. The story is filled with 16 different characters, all voiced professionally, creating a dynamic audio experience. Whether you’re working solo or as a team, you can play on Normal or Hard Mode—the latter offering a more challenging experience with fewer hints.

The game also includes a scoring system, encouraging friendly competition and allowing you to see how well you perform by the end. After collecting clues, you’ll make your deductions and issue an arrest warrant, culminating in a Case Performance Score.

What Do Reviews Say?

Feedback has been generally positive, with a couple of points worth noting. One reviewer, Dylyn_N, mentioned that “two of the map points had been changed,” which could temporarily impact the experience but also highlights the need for the organizers to keep the clues current. Another reviewer, Danielle_S, had a great time solving clues, noting that “It helped to have a picture of what we were looking for,” especially since they weren’t from Cheyenne. She also suggested updating some of the visual cues, like the cinema clue, but overall praised the experience as “awesome.”

What’s Included and What’s Not?

Included is a live GPS map, the audio clues, and a built-in scoring system, all accessible via your mobile device. Customer support is available if questions or issues arise.

However, you’ll need your own charged smartphone and headphones or earbuds for the best experience. Transportation is not provided, so plan to meet at the designated starting point. The activity ends back at the original meeting point, making it a convenient loop.

Practicalities and Pricing

At $14.99 per person, this tour offers a cost-effective way to combine sightseeing and entertainment. Given its flexible timing—available anytime after booking—you can start whenever it suits your schedule, making it a good option for an afternoon or evening activity.

The booking window is quite flexible, with most people booking about two weeks in advance, and the experience is available daily, from noon until late at night. The booking size is flexible—each ticket allows one device, so larger groups simply need more tickets.
