The instructor tapped me twice on the shoulder. That was the signal. I was sitting in the open door of a plane at 13,000 feet, my legs dangling over the Palm Jumeirah, and a man I’d met 30 minutes ago was strapped to my back telling me to cross my arms.
Then we fell. Not jumped — fell. Forward and out, into 200km/h of wind and the most disorienting 60 seconds of my life.

Skydive Dubai is the only licensed tandem skydiving operator in the emirate. They run jumps over the Palm Jumeirah drop zone — the most scenic skydive location in the world. You jump from 13,000 feet, freefall for 60 seconds at 200+ km/h, then float under a parachute for 5-7 minutes with views of the entire Dubai coastline.

The complete package costs $680 and includes the jump, a professional camera operator who films your entire experience (they jump alongside you), and a yacht cruise from the Marina afterwards. One reviewer called it: “Absolutely amazing! My best birthday adventure to date. Skydive Dubai is the best in the world.”

Exactly What Happens — Minute by Minute
The whole experience takes about 3-4 hours from check-in to landing. Here’s the full timeline so you know exactly what you’re getting into.
Check-in and Briefing (60-90 minutes)
You arrive at the Skydive Dubai facility near Dubai Marina. The check-in process is thorough: paperwork, liability waiver (it’s detailed — read it, sign it, move on), weight check, and assignment to your tandem instructor.

The ground briefing takes about 30 minutes. It covers your body position during freefall, the hand signals your instructor will use, and the procedure for the exit, freefall, and landing. You’re fitted with a jumpsuit (over your clothes), goggles, and the harness that connects you to your instructor.
Your camera operator is introduced — this person will jump alongside you from the same aircraft and film your entire experience. They wear a helmet-mounted camera and a handheld camera. The footage they produce is professional quality — close-up reactions during freefall, the Palm visible behind you, the parachute deployment, and the landing.
The Aircraft (15 minutes)
The flight to 13,000 feet takes about 15 minutes in a turboprop aircraft. The mood inside is a mix of nervous energy and forced calm. Your instructor clips your harness to theirs during the ascent. By the time the door opens, you’re connected chest-to-chest — there’s literally no way to separate.

The door opens at altitude. The wind and noise are immediate and overwhelming. Your instructor walks you to the edge, your feet hanging over 13,000 feet of empty air. A tap on the shoulder. Arms crossed. Lean forward.
Freefall (60 seconds)
The first 3 seconds are pure chaos — the wind, the rotation, the sensory overload. Then your instructor stabilises the fall and suddenly you’re in a position. Face down, arms out, 200km/h of wind pressing against your body. The Palm Jumeirah is below you, getting closer but not fast enough to feel dangerous.

The freefall lasts about 60 seconds — which is both the longest and shortest minute of your life. The wind is so loud it drowns out everything, including your own screaming (which you will do, regardless of what you promised yourself on the ground). The temperature drops noticeably at altitude — the air at 13,000 feet is cold even in Dubai summer.
Parachute Deployment and Descent (5-7 minutes)
At about 5,000 feet, your instructor deploys the parachute. The deceleration is dramatic — from 200km/h to gliding speed in about 3 seconds. The noise stops. The chaos stops. Suddenly you’re floating in complete silence above the Palm Jumeirah.

This phase is 5-7 minutes of the most peaceful aerial views imaginable. The instructor hands you the steering toggles. You can guide the parachute — left toggle turns left, right toggle turns right. Below you, the Palm’s fronds are individually visible. The water is turquoise near the shore and deep blue further out. The Burj Khalifa catches the sun on the mainland.
Your instructor points out landmarks, takes selfies with you (yes, at altitude), and prepares for the approach to the landing zone.
Landing
The landing zone is on the Palm Jumeirah itself. Your instructor brings you in on a long, slow approach. You lift your legs for the final flare and touch down standing (usually). The ground crew is waiting. Your camera operator lands nearby with your footage.

Post-Jump: Yacht Cruise
The $680 GYG package includes a yacht cruise from Dubai Marina after the jump. It’s a smart addition — you’re running on adrenaline and the gentle cruise past the landmarks you just saw from 13,000 feet provides a perfect wind-down. Drinks are served. The video editing starts. Most people are grinning for the entire boat ride.
Our Recommended Bookings
1. Skydive at The Palm with Photos, Video & Yacht Tour — $680

The primary booking option. Tandem jump from 13,000 feet over the Palm Jumeirah, a professional camera operator filming your entire experience, all photos and video delivered digitally, and a yacht cruise from Dubai Marina afterwards. The complete package.
Skydive Dubai is the only operator — there are no alternatives or competitors for tandem skydiving in Dubai. The $680 includes everything except hotel transfers (arrange your own taxi or Uber to the Marina facility). Book at least 2 weeks in advance — slots fill up fast, especially during the October-April tourist season. See our full review of the Skydive Dubai experience.
2. Skydive Tandem Over The Palm with Transfers — $1,399

The same Skydive Dubai jump with premium additions: private hotel pickup and drop-off, priority check-in, and VIP treatment at the facility. The actual skydiving experience is identical to the $680 package — same instructors, same aircraft, same altitude. The extra $719 covers transfers and service upgrades.
This makes sense if you’re staying far from the Marina and want the logistics handled, or if you’re celebrating a special occasion and want the VIP treatment. For most visitors, the $680 GYG package is better value. Check our full review of the premium package.
3. Private Skydive Experience with Transfer Option — $1,061

A mid-range Viator listing with optional hotel transfers. The skydiving experience is identical to both other packages — same operator, same jump, same altitude. The transfer option adds convenience if you’re not near the Marina. Flexible cancellation policy on Viator.
At $1,061, it sits between the basic GYG package ($680) and the full VIP Viator ($1,399). The right choice depends on whether you need transfers and how much flexibility you want in your booking. See our full review of this package.
The Drop Zones — Palm vs Desert
Skydive Dubai operates two drop zones. The Palm drop zone (over the Palm Jumeirah) is the famous one — it’s what most people book and what the photos show. The Desert drop zone (at Al Ain) is cheaper but lands you in the sand instead of on the Palm. For travelers, the Palm is the only option worth considering.
Palm Drop Zone: Jump over the Palm Jumeirah. Land on the Palm. See the Dubai coastline, the Burj Khalifa, and the Arabian Gulf from freefall altitude. This is the one that makes the bucket-list compilations and the Instagram posts. The package at $680+ includes this zone.
Desert Drop Zone: Jump over the desert near Al Ain, about 90 minutes from Dubai. Land in the sand. The views are desert — empty and vast but not iconic. This zone is primarily for experienced skydivers and sport jumping. It’s significantly cheaper but doesn’t offer the Dubai views that travelers want. Available through the official Skydive Dubai website directly.
Practical Tips — Everything They Don’t Tell You in the Brochure
Book 2-3 weeks ahead. Skydive Dubai is one of the most popular tandem operations in the world. Slots — especially morning slots and weekend dates — sell out weeks in advance during peak tourist season (October-April). Last-minute availability is rare. Don’t leave it for your final day.
Weather cancellations are common. High winds, sandstorms, low clouds, and reduced visibility cancel jumps. The operator makes the call on the morning of your jump. If cancelled, they reschedule for free (subject to availability) or refund. Build flexibility into your itinerary — don’t book it for your only free day.

Weight limit: 100kg. The maximum weight for tandem passengers is 100kg (220 lbs). This is a safety limit — the combined weight of passenger, instructor, and equipment must fall within the parachute system’s operating range. Weigh-in happens at check-in. Be honest at booking — the limit is enforced.
Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes. No sandals, no loose clothing, no scarves. Trainers, t-shirt, and trousers or shorts are ideal. Jumpsuits are provided over your clothes. Goggles are provided. Leave jewellery, watches, and loose accessories in the locker.
You will scream. Everyone does. The instructors know this. The camera operators capture it. There is no dignified way to exit an aircraft at 13,000 feet. Embrace it.
The fear is normal and temporary. Every first-time tandem jumper is scared. The fear peaks in the aircraft door. It lasts about 3 seconds of freefall. Then your brain switches from “this is terrifying” to “this is incredible.” The transition is instant. Every person I’ve spoken to — without exception — said they’d do it again.
Eat a light breakfast. A full stomach at altitude isn’t comfortable. The pressure changes and the adrenaline can cause nausea. Eat something light 2 hours before your jump. Avoid heavy, greasy food. Skip alcohol the night before.
The photos and video are worth the money. The camera operator jumps alongside you and captures angles you could never get yourself. The close-up of your face during freefall — terror to joy in 5 seconds — is the most authentic travel photo you’ll ever take. The edited package is delivered within hours and it’s professional quality.
How Skydiving Compares to Other Dubai Aerials
Dubai has more aerial experiences than any city I know. Here’s where skydiving fits.
vs Parasailing ($67-$95): Parasailing is gentle, calm, and scenic. Skydiving is violent, terrifying, and life-changing. Parasailing is a 15-minute float at 150m. Skydiving is a 60-second freefall from 4,000m followed by a 5-minute parachute descent. One is a nice activity. The other rewires your brain. They’re not comparable except that both involve being in the air.
vs Helicopter ($195-$353): The helicopter tours give you aerial views from inside a cabin with commentary. Skydiving gives you the same views from the open sky with no cabin, no glass, and no engine noise (during parachute descent). The helicopter is sightseeing. Skydiving is a life experience that happens to include sightseeing.
vs Observation Decks ($14-$209): The Burj Khalifa is higher than skydiving freefall altitude but you’re behind glass in a climate-controlled room. Skydiving is open air at 4,000m. The Burj Khalifa is a view. Skydiving is an event.
Is Skydiving Over the Palm Worth $680?
If skydiving is on your bucket list and you want to do it somewhere that elevates the experience beyond “I jumped out of a plane,” there is nowhere better than over the Palm Jumeirah. The combination of the Dubai skyline, the man-made island, the turquoise Gulf, and the desert behind the city creates a visual backdrop that no other drop zone in the world can match.
At $680, it’s the most expensive single activity in Dubai. For context: a desert safari is $29-$88. A helicopter tour is $195-$353. The Dinner in the Sky is $199. Skydiving is in a different category of both price and experience.
The question isn’t “is it worth $680?” but “is skydiving over the Palm Jumeirah the right place to do your first (or best) tandem jump?” The answer is yes — if the Dubai skyline matters to you. If you just want the freefall experience, cheaper options exist at drop zones worldwide.
Getting There
Location: Skydive Dubai facility, Al Seyahi Street, near Dubai Marina. The facility is between the Marina and the Palm Jumeirah entrance.
Taxi: Ask for “Skydive Dubai” — the drivers know it. Budget AED 30-60 ($8-$16) from central Dubai hotels.
The GYG package does NOT include hotel transfers. Arrange your own transport. The Viator packages ($1,061-$1,399) include transfers if that matters to you.
Planning the Rest of Your Dubai Trip
Skydiving tends to be the highlight of any Dubai trip — schedule it in the first half of your visit so you’re not anxious about it for days before. The post-jump yacht cruise fills the immediate aftermath. The evening pairs well with a relaxed dinner cruise or a La Perle show — anything that doesn’t require physical exertion, because your body will be running on adrenaline fumes.
The next day, the desert safari offers a completely different kind of adrenaline — sand dunes instead of sky. The Old Dubai walking tour through the souks provides cultural grounding after the extreme tourism of skydiving. And the Burj Khalifa lets you see the city from a high point without jumping out of anything — a calmer way to appreciate the view you saw in freefall.
