Chefchaouen is the blue city. Every wall, door, step, fountain, and plant pot painted in some shade of blue — cobalt, cerulean, powder blue, indigo, turquoise. From a distance, nestled against the Rif Mountains, the whole medina looks like a single architectural watercolour. Up close, it’s disorientingly photogenic; every angle works.
The Chefchaouen day trip from Fez is the standard way to see it — 4 hours each way on the N13 highway through the Rif. Tour prices range from $22 for the popular group tour up to $52 for a small-group variant. Most tours give you 3-4 hours in the medina itself.

The blue paint tradition is relatively recent. Jewish refugees fleeing Spain in the 1930s are usually credited with establishing it, though the practice may date further back. What’s certain is that today the town actively maintains the colour — residents repaint annually, and the municipality supports the tradition.
Tourism has transformed the town. 30 years ago Chefchaouen was a sleepy mountain backwater; now it’s on every Morocco itinerary. The social media era accelerated this — it’s one of the most-photographed cities in North Africa.

The Medina — Where to Walk
Chefchaouen’s medina is small by Moroccan standards — about 2 square kilometres. You can walk the whole thing in 90 minutes without stopping. In practice, you’ll stop constantly; every turn reveals a new photo.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam — The Central Square
The main plaza at the heart of the medina. Surrounded by cafés, the 15th-century Kasbah (now a museum), and the main mosque. The plaza is where most tours start or end, and where most food tours concentrate.

The Kasbah Museum costs 20 MAD ($2) — small ethnographic collection showing Riffian Berber artefacts, plus a rooftop viewpoint. 45 minutes is enough; worth the entry if you have the time.
The Best Photo Spots
Chefchaouen is a photographer’s town. The most-Instagrammed spots:
The Blue Doorway: A staircase with saturated blue walls on both sides, bright geraniums in pots, often a local cat. Several versions exist throughout the medina; guides know the best ones.

The Flower Pot Corner: Various intersections where residents have created colourful plant displays against the blue walls. Known to guides, shifted locations as residents add new arrangements.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam rooftops: Several cafés offer rooftop seating with city views. Good for late-afternoon coffee with the golden light on the blue walls.
Ras el-Ma Spring: The mountain spring on the north edge of the medina. Women still come to wash clothes here; local scene with water flowing through small channels. 15-minute walk from Plaza Uta el-Hammam.

The Rif Mountain Setting
The town sits against the Rif Mountains, which reach 2,400 metres above sea level. Two peaks flank the city: Jebel el-Kelaa (1,616m) and Jebel Meggou (1,616m). Both are hikeable; day tours rarely include them.

Our Recommended Tours
1. Chefchaouen Day Trip from Fez with Hotel Pickup — $22

Most-reviewed Chefchaouen day trip — 1,534 reviews with 4.6-star average. Hotel pickup from Fez at 7am, 4-hour drive, 4 hours in Chefchaouen, return to Fez by 8-9pm. Transport only; lunch is on your own.
At $22, this is among the best-value day trips in Morocco. Our full review of this tour breaks down the day structure and what to do during your 4 hours in the medina.
2. Best Chefchaouen Day Tour from Fez — $44

Premium GetYourGuide tier. Group size is smaller (8-12 vs 12-16 for the $22 option), and the tour includes a guided walk through the medina rather than just drop-off and pickup.
Worth the $22 premium if you prefer structured guided experiences or want the extra medina time that goes with the smaller group. Our full review of this premium tour compares it directly to the budget option.
3. Small Group Day Trip from Fez — $52

Premium Viator option. Small groups (max 8 people), 5-star reviews. Personal guide, flexible medina itinerary, time at Ras el-Ma Spring and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint.
The $30 premium over the budget option buys a substantially more curated experience. Our review of this Viator small-group tour explains what the premium actually delivers.

Practical Tips
Long drive day. 4 hours each way = 8 hours in the van + 4 hours in Chefchaouen = 12+ hour day. Motion sickness prone travellers should take a pill before departure.
Overnight if possible. If you can extend the day trip to an overnight, do it. Chefchaouen at sunset and sunrise (both empty of day-tour crowds) is a different, better experience. Riads start at 250 MAD ($25) per night.
Wear comfortable shoes. Cobblestones, steep stairs, uneven pavements. Not flip-flop territory.

Cash only. Most Chefchaouen shops and cafés don’t take cards. Bring 500-1000 MAD ($50-100) for lunch, drinks, and crafts purchases.
Photo etiquette. Local residents are generally photo-tolerant but some women don’t want to be photographed. Ask before shooting individuals. Photos of streets and general medina life are fine without asking.
Bargaining. Expected for crafts. Opening prices are 2-3x final fair prices. Counter at 30-40%, settle around 50-60%. Lower than Marrakech bargaining percentages.
Kif/hashish offers. Chefchaouen is in Morocco’s cannabis-growing region. You’ll be offered hash by young men in the medina. Politely decline — still illegal despite the local cultivation, and enforcement is stricter for foreigners.
Chefchaouen vs Other Morocco Day Trips
vs Essaouira from Marrakech: Essaouira is coastal (Atlantic fishing town); Chefchaouen is mountain (blue medina). Different northern vs southern Morocco experiences.
vs Fez Medina: Fez is the mother of all Moroccan medinas (1,200 years old, 9,000 streets). Chefchaouen is its younger, prettier, much smaller cousin. Do Fez for depth, Chefchaouen for aesthetics.
vs Casablanca Hassan II Mosque: Casablanca is urban Atlantic; Chefchaouen is mountain Rif. Casablanca is one major building; Chefchaouen is a whole town experience.
vs Ouarzazate from Marrakech: Ouarzazate is desert and kasbah (southern Morocco). Chefchaouen is mountain and blue medina (northern Morocco). Both are long-drive day trips; book based on your base city.
Getting There
From Fez: 4 hours by road (205 km). Tours are the easiest option; public bus exists (CTM line, 5 hours, 85 MAD) but slower.
From Tangier: 2.5 hours by road. If you’re arriving via the ferry from Spain, Chefchaouen is a natural first stop.
From Marrakech: Not practical as a day trip — 9+ hours each way. Requires overnight or a different route.
Driving yourself: Possible. The N13 from Fez is fine; winding mountain road in the last 30 km. Park outside the medina (free lot on the south side) and walk in.
Is Chefchaouen Worth the Day Trip?
Yes — at $22 for the group tour, definitely. Chefchaouen is visually distinctive, genuinely photogenic, and far enough from the Morocco mainstream tourist path to feel like a discovery.
Skip only if you’re colour-blind (most of the appeal is the blue paint) or if you strongly prefer authentic cultural depth over visual beauty — Chefchaouen has become tourist-shaped since the Instagram era, and some visitors find it performative.
Building Chefchaouen Into Your Morocco Trip
If you’re travelling north to south: Tangier (ferry arrival), Chefchaouen overnight (1 night), Fez (2-3 nights), Marrakech via train (3-4 nights), Sahara tour from Marrakech (3 days). Chefchaouen fits as a 24-hour stop between Tangier and Fez.
If you’re Fez-based: Chefchaouen as a day trip on your second or third day. Day 1 Fez medina, day 2 Chefchaouen, day 3 Fez museums and surrounding area. For a week focused on northern Morocco, add a Fez Medina walking tour, Casablanca day trip, and a Rabat side trip — four diverse days without the long southern drives.
