The quad bike kicked up a rooster-tail of ochre dust behind me and I leaned into the turn at maybe 35 km/h, which felt like 100. Palm trees on both sides, red earth underneath, Atlas Mountains on the horizon. I had been assured, incorrectly, that quad biking in Marrakech’s palm grove was “for beginners.”
The two main quad biking options around Marrakech are different beasts. The Palmeraie tours run through the palm grove north of the city — flat, fast, and scenic. The Agafay tours head into the stone desert 45 minutes south — bumpier, longer, and more adventurous. Both run 2-3 hours on the bike and cost between $48 and $75.

No previous experience is required for either tour. Quads are automatic transmission — throttle, brakes, no gears. After a 10-minute briefing and a practice circuit, most visitors are comfortable enough to handle the main route. Children aged 6+ can ride as passengers with a parent; kids 12+ can drive their own in the slower tours.
The routes avoid public roads entirely — you’re on private agricultural land or dedicated off-road tracks the whole time. No licence required.

The Palmeraie — Marrakech’s Palm Grove
La Palmeraie is a 54-square-kilometre area of palm plantations on the northern outskirts of Marrakech. It’s been cultivated since the 12th century and contains roughly 100,000 date palms. It’s the most accessible off-road area from the city — 20 minutes from the medina by car.

Agafay — The Stone Desert Option
The alternative to the Palmeraie is the Agafay Desert — 45 minutes south of Marrakech. The Agafay quad tour covers more distance (25-30km versus 15-20km in Palmeraie), crosses open terrain without palms, and tends to be more physically demanding.

If you have the full day, combine Agafay quad biking with a sunset camel ride and dinner — many operators package this together. See our Agafay Desert tour guide for the combo options; there’s a quad-plus-camel-plus-dinner package at $48 that’s the best value of any Agafay experience.

The Bikes and the Riding Experience
Most Marrakech tours use 250cc or 350cc quads — enough power to be fun, not enough to be dangerous for beginners. Brands vary; common makes are Kymco, Polaris, and Yamaha. The bikes are automatic transmission.

Our Recommended Tours
1. Palm Grove 2-Hour Quad Biking — $52

The classic Marrakech quad bike tour. 46 reviews with 4.5-star average. Pickup from your riad around 9am or 2pm, transfer to the Palmeraie, 2 hours of riding, lunch or tea break, return by mid-afternoon or early evening.
The Palmeraie option is the right choice if you want scenery-rich riding without the endurance demands of the Agafay route. Our review of the Palm Grove quad tour covers route specifics and beginner tips.
2. Sunset Quad Bike Adventure Marrakech — $52

5-star rated sunset version of the Marrakech quad adventure. Same general route as the standard daytime tour but timed for the last 2 hours before sunset — when the light turns golden and the temperatures drop into the comfortable range.
Same price as the standard daytime tour, dramatically better photos. If you’re on this trip primarily for the experience and the images, book the sunset version. Our full review of the sunset quad tour covers optimal timing and what to pack for the temperature drop after dark.
3. Premium Sunset Quad Biking Palmeraie — $76

The premium Palmeraie option. Smaller groups (max 6 riders), better-maintained bikes, extended riding time (closer to 3 hours), guaranteed sunset timing.
Worth the $24 premium over option 1 if you’re photographing seriously or if you don’t want the crowd aspect of the standard tour. Our review of this premium Palmeraie tour breaks down the differences in bike quality and guide style.
The Palmeraie — A Bit of History
The Marrakech palm grove was established in the 12th century under Almoravid rule. The Almoravids brought Saharan irrigation techniques to what was a dry plain, building a system of underground channels (khettara) to bring snowmelt from the Atlas Mountains down to the palm plantations.

The Moroccan government now protects the remaining palmeraie under conservation law — new building is restricted, and the underground irrigation channels have been mapped and are maintained as heritage infrastructure. The agricultural tracks the quad tours use are the original farm roads between plantations.

Practical Tips
Dress for dust. Long trousers, closed-toe shoes, and a long-sleeve shirt. The quads kick up a lot of dust and stones. Sunglasses or goggles essential — some tours provide them, most don’t. Bring your own.
Bandana or scarf. A cloth to cover your nose and mouth makes a real difference. The dust is the main discomfort on these rides; without covering your face you’ll be sneezing for the rest of the day.
Don’t wear white. Whatever you wear, it will be covered in red Marrakech dust by the end. Wear old clothes or plan to wash everything that night.
Morning or sunset, not midday. Midday in summer is 40°C and the dust is worse because the ground is bone-dry. Morning (8-11am) and late afternoon (4-7pm) are substantially better.

Tip the guide. 50-100 MAD ($5-10) per rider is appropriate for a good tour. Not included in the booking price.
Check your insurance. Most tours include basic liability insurance but not personal injury. If you have travel insurance, check whether it covers motorized off-road activities; many standard policies exclude them.
Consider the length. 2 hours on a quad is enough for most people. 3 hours is the upper limit before saddle fatigue and dust fatigue set in. Don’t book the 4-hour tour as your first quad experience.
Kid considerations. Kids 6-11 can ride as passengers (most tours) with a parent driving. 12+ can drive their own quads on the slower beginner tours. Under 6 not allowed by most operators.

Quad Biking vs Other Marrakech Day Trips
vs Agafay Desert Sunset: The Agafay Desert tour is camel-and-dinner focused, not quad-focused. If you want the combined experience — quad bikes + camels + sunset dinner — book the $48 combo in the Agafay Desert guide rather than a standalone quad tour.
vs Atlas Mountains Hike: The Atlas hike is a full-day, physical, cultural experience. Quad biking is 2-3 hours, adrenaline, no hiking. Completely different. Pair them — Atlas on one day, quad bikes on the next — for a contrast experience.
vs Ouzoud Waterfalls: Ouzoud is a full-day waterfall trip with a moderate walk. Quad biking is a half-day thrill activity. No overlap; do both if you have the days.
vs Medina walking tour: The medina tour is slow, cultural, and entirely on foot in the old city. Quad biking is fast, natural, and outside the city. Both worth doing but on different days — quad biking is tiring; pair it with an easy evening, not a full-day walk.
Getting There
Location: Palmeraie tours depart from the palm grove’s edge (20 minutes from the medina). Agafay tours depart from Agafay (45 minutes from Marrakech, see our Agafay guide).
Transfer: All tours include riad pickup and drop-off. No need to arrange your own transport.
Private booking: Available at slightly higher prices (typically 30-50% premium). Worth it if you have a group of 4+ and want to customize the route.
Is a Quad Tour Worth $52-$76?
For the thrill and the novelty — yes. It’s one of the more unique Marrakech experiences, especially for travellers who want something beyond the standard medina and market circuit.
The price comparison: equivalent quad tours in Europe (Andorra, Spain, Portugal) run $80-120 for similar duration. Morocco’s $52 is genuine value.
Skip if you’re specifically looking for cultural experiences or if you dislike dust and noise. Do it if you want an active, memorable afternoon that most tourists miss.
Building Quad Biking Into Your Marrakech Trip
A quad tour fills a half-day (morning or late afternoon). That leaves the rest of your day for other activities.
The natural pairings: morning Medina walking tour, afternoon quad biking. Or sunset quad biking followed by a Marrakech food tour in the evening (you’ll arrive hungry and dusty — shower first).
For an adventure-themed Marrakech week: quad biking on day 2, Atlas hike on day 3, Sahara 3-day tour on days 4-6. This is about as aggressive as Marrakech gets — physical, outdoors, and far from the usual tourist circuit. For a softer alternative, pair quad biking with a hammam session the same evening. The steam room and massage work miracles on the muscle soreness from hanging onto a quad for three hours.
